Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I consider getting an electric vehicle charger installed at home?

Plus icon - black

Having an EV charger at home offers unparalleled convenience. Say goodbye to gas stations — you'll have your own personal refuelling station right in your garage!

Is it difficult to install an EV charger at home?

Plus icon - black

Installing a new electric vehicle charger is a straightforward job — for a professional electrician. The electrician will wire your charging station to fit your home's electrical system.

We don't recommend attempting to install your own charger. This is a job for a pro with experience in EV installs, not a DIY.

How long does it take to charge an EV at home?

Plus icon - black

Charging times vary based on your charger's power level and your EV's battery capacity. With a Level 2 charger, you can typically get a full charge overnight.

Will installing an EV charger increase my electricity bill significantly?

Plus icon - black

Since you'll be using more electricity, your energy bill will increase when you start charging your car. However, many EV drivers find that the cost of charging at home is still lower than refueling at gas stations. The impact on your electricity bill also depends on your usage and local rates.

Can I install an EV charger if I rent my home or live in an apartment?

Plus icon - black

It's worth discussing with your landlord or property manager. Some solutions, like shared charging stations in apartment complexes, are becoming more common.

Do I need a specific type of electrical outlet for the charger?

Plus icon - black

Level 2 chargers typically require a 240-volt outlet, similar to those used for clothes dryers. Electricians can assess your home's electrical setup to ensure compatibility.

What kind of batteries keep an EV running?

Plus icon - black

EV batteries are made from Lithium-ion, like smartphones, laptops and most rechargeable household electronics. And they’re 90% recyclable!

How much space do I need to install an EV charging station?

Plus icon - black

Most charging stations are quite compact. All you need is a flat, hard surface with space for the following dimensions:

  • Width: 7.62 in / 193 mm
  • Height: 17 in / 432 mm
  • Length: 6.9 in / 175 mm

When installing your station, keep in mind the distance to your electrical box. Consider how you'd normally go about parking your car and make sure there will be enough room.

Do I need a permit to install an electric vehicle charger at home?

Plus icon - black

When you hire Rümi for installation, our certified electrician will take care of the electrical permit and the inspection for you. We’ll also fill out any necessary documents for rebates and incentives.

Find out who’s making it even easier to go greener with rebates. Like the federal government’s rebate on zero-emissions vehicles.

Is there an Alberta electric vehicle inventive?

Plus icon - black

If you're looking for an Alberta EV incentive, Electric Vehicle Association provides a list of active incentives. Your Rümi EV pro will let you know which incentives and rebates are available.

Looking for federal incentives? Government of Canada has Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles for eligible vehicles.

Can I install my EV charging station outside?

Plus icon - black

Of course! Most EV chargers can handle temperatures ranging from -40°C to 50°C. The casings are resistant to corrosion, dust, rain, snow, sleet and ice. You can even hose them down while cleaning!

Is there any maintenance to do on the charging station?

Plus icon - black

Generally, no! Once your station is installed, all you need to do is roll up and plug in.

Can I take my EV charger with me if I move?

Plus icon - black

While it's technically possible to uninstall and move a charger, it's more practical to leave your EV charger behind.

Can I use my home EV charger for multiple vehicles?

Plus icon - black

Some chargers offer the flexibility to charge multiple vehicles. Discuss your needs with the installer to find a suitable setup.

How much electricity does it take to charge an EV?

Plus icon - black

Now see, that’s a tricky question, and the answer will depend on what kind of snazzy EV you pick up at the dealership. Check with your Rümi EV Installation pro for exact specifications.
