Gutter Cleaning 101

Is gutter cleaning a solo show, or should you call a pro?

Got your sights set on spring? You might be thinking about the nitty-gritty to-do list that comes along with homeownership. Gutter cleaning is likely on that list.

It’s generally best to clean your gutters in the spring and fall. Depending on the weather, and number of trees near your home, you may want to clean them more often. But is gutter cleaning a solo show, or should you call a pro? Here are the safety tips you need to consider for a DIY, and some even better reasons to call a Rümi professional for help!

Do it yourself, SAFELY!

Cleaning your own gutters can be a cost-effective and rewarding task; nothing like a little elbow grease and sweat equity poured into your home! But it’s important to take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety. Here are some tips to help you clean your gutters safely and effectively:

  1. Start with the basics, and don’t cut corners. You’re going to need the right equipment, like a ladder, heavy-duty working gloves, bucket, scoop or trowel, and a hose or spray nozzle.
Most importantly, make sure you’ve got the right ladder for the job. A ladder that’s too short, rickety or poorly secured can leave you hanging, and in serious trouble. If your gutters are high up, you’ll need an extension ladder, and you should consider using a ladder stabilizer or have someone nearby hold the ladder for you.
  2. Prioritize safety. Start by getting your protective gear ready. You’ll need to use gloves to protect your hands from sharp objects and debris. We also recommend wearing a dust mask or goggles to protect your eyes and lungs from dust and debris. Next, you'll need to clear the area you're working in, making sure the area around the ladder is free of any obstacles (make sure pets and animals are secured!), and place the ladder on a solid and level surface.
When you’re up on a ladder, make sure to face the ladder and keep three points of contact with the ladder at all times. That means two feet and one hand on the ladder keeps you safe. Try your best to avoid overreaching, and if you need to move the ladder, make sure to move it slowly and carefully. And whatever you do, don’t climb on the roof to clean your gutters — it’s simply not worth the risk.
  3. Get to work. Scoop, flush, check! Scoop out debris with a trowel to remove leaves, sticks, and other debris from the gutters and place it in your bucket. Be sure to dispose of debris properly by placing it in your municipal compost bin. Next, flush out the gutters using a hose or spray nozzle to clear out any remaining debris, and to make sure the gutters are draining properly. While the water is cleaning out the last of the debris, check for leaks or clogs in the gutters and downspouts, and make note of any necessary repairs.

By following these steps, you can safely clean your own gutters and keep your home protected from water damage. BUT if you feel unsure about your ability to clean your gutters safely, it may be best to hire a Rümi professional.

Call in a pro!

Often described as tedious, dreaded, and a necessary evil, gutter cleaning is rarely at the top of a homeowner’s fun list. So as great as all that hard work sounds… there’s something to be said for having the dirt and grime dealt with for you. Here are the top reasons you should kick back and relax, and call a Rümi service provider to clean your gutters for you:

  1. Safety. Cleaning gutters can be a dangerous task, especially if the gutters are high up or on a steep slope of your home’s exterior. Professionals have the equipment and experience necessary to clean gutters safely and effectively.
  2. Efficiency. Cleaning gutters is a time-consuming task that usually needs to be done once or twice a year. It depends on nearby foliage and other environmental factors. There are better ways to spend a spring weekend, and a professional will be able to get the job done much faster and more efficiently. Not having to deal with the mess left by a power washer and leaf blower sounds like a win to us!
  3. Quality of work. Our pros have the experience, knowledge, and proper equipment to get the job done right. They follow rigorous safety standards to keep themselves and your property safe. And they love getting rid of gutter gunk!
If you don’t maintain your gutters, the wet leaves, gunk, junk and whatever those darn squirrels tucked away up there can weigh down your gutter system. This causes damage to your gutters or roof. Our service providers will always do a thorough job of cleaning your gutters to ensure they are functioning properly. They can also identify and repair any problems, such as leaks or clogs, that might be affecting the performance of your gutters.
  4. Peace of mind. Hiring a professional to clean your gutters takes the burden off you and gives you peace of mind that the job is being done correctly and safely. Best of all, it frees up your weekend to spend time doing things much more glamorous than cleaning your gutters!

As winter thaws, we find the flaws. So, now’s the time to make a plan for your home’s spring refresh! A clean roof and gutter system make for a happy home. Prioritizing the cleanliness and function of your gutters will keep your home happy for years to come.
