Habitat for Humanity Partners With Rümi

Habitat for Humanity announces new partnership with Rümi to enhance affordable home ownership opportunities in Southern Alberta.

Calgary, AB – Today, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta is announcing a new partnership with Rümi and its sister brands, ATCOenergy and Blue Flame Kitchen, for a new Affordable Home Refurbishment Program.

Home refurbishments are an integral part of Habitat for Humanity’s affordable home ownership program. This ensures that homes sold back to the organization are renovated to design and energy-efficiency standards before being made available to new Habitat homeowners, resulting in a healthy and well-maintained affordable home ownership program. This partnership will enhance those refurbishments by adding funds, along with valuable in-kind services.

These in-kind services include locksmith services, carpet cleaning, duct cleaning, window cleaning; free energy from ATCOenergy for six months for up to 10 homeowners purchasing refurbished homes annually; and welcome meals from Blue Flame Kitchen. The Rümi team will also take part in a team Build Day to help build new affordable homes in Calgary.

“At Rümi, our purpose is to make it easier for people to love the places they live, and this is why we believe supporting affordable housing is critical to building strong communities,” said Marshall Wilmot, President, Rümi. “We know it takes a lot to make a house a home — from the utilities that keep you warm during the winter to healthy meals that fuel your family, it's our privilege to support Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta in welcoming these families home.”

Eleven per cent of Albertans are in core housing need, paying more than 30 per cent of their income to find housing that is adequate, suitable and affordable for their families. Every Habitat home – new and refurbished – helps families build long-term strength, stability and independence through affordable home ownership.

“At Habitat for Humanity, we’re dedicated to providing quality affordable home ownership opportunities to local families. We're thankful for the way that Rümi is contributing valuable services to Habitat homeowners and enhancing our home ownership program across Southern Alberta,” said Gerrad Oishi, President and CEO for Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta.

Each year, Habitat helps more than 20 families buy an affordable home. Last year, eight families bought a refurbished home and this year, 10 families are expected to purchase refurbished homes. Affordable home ownership has a lasting impact on families and communities. Habitat homeowners report experiencing less stress related to housing, that their children are doing better in school, and that they have made more connections in the community since moving into their Habitat home.
